The IHO S-100 family of product specifications is gaining real momentum. ECDIS vendors, port systems, and maritime software are updating their stacks to ingest S-100 encodings — moving away from bespoke formats toward a shared, machine-readable standard for currents, water levels, waves, and more.
Calypso Science has been part of that transition. We participated in the LINZ S-100 test bed, working through real-world export, delivery, and consumption of hydrodynamic model output in standard form. That work validated our pipeline end to end: we can now export any of your model forecasts to S-100 — typically S-104 Water Level (Edition 2.0) on a regular grid, and S-111 Surface Currents on an irregular node layout (DCF 3), with full metadata for operational use. To show what that looks like in practice, we put together the SeaScope S-100 Demo Portal — a public map with a selection of our models already encoded and ready to explore. At Calypso Science, we have developed SeaScope, an advanced tool designed for professional marine users. This innovative tool provides real-time forecast data, measured observations, and model-measured comparisons, offering a comprehensive decision-making platform for harbor pilots, offshore operators or vessel traffic services. SeaScope enables users to visualise and compare environmental conditions in real time, track operational thresholds, and download data tailored to their specific Portable Pilot Units (PPUs).
