SeaScope Aotearoa - ocean data brought to life

If ocean data really is the essential lubricant for a thriving blue economy, why is it so hard to find and even harder to visualise the key variables? At Calypso Science we have been solving this dilemma by using the OCEANUM.IO tech stack to build intuitive graphics and digital twins of the ocean. While industry and research clearly benefit from these products, we wanted to expose the data to the rest of the community too.
So, we’ve released SeaScope Aotearoa - an open app to present near real time ocean observations in a clear and compelling way. We hope that students, community groups, professionals, marine users and the ocean curious enjoy the interaction.

SeaScope Aotearoa integrates a wide range of open-source and institutional datasets. Observational data includes contributions from projects such as the MOANA Project, the ARGO network, and various regional council monitoring programmes.
To complement these observations, we’ve integrated forecast data:
  • Wind forecasts are sourced from the GFS model.
  • Wave forecasts are provided by OCEANUM’s 5 km regional wave model.
  • Tidal information is derived from a combination of Calypso Science’s high-resolution coastal model and OCEANUM’s downscaled OTIS solution.
All data queries are handled through the OCEANUM Datamesh, allowing seamless access and integration. The model forecasts are refreshed daily, while observational data updates hourly, ensuring users always see the latest conditions.
We are continuously looking to expand the platform.
  •  If you have datasets collected around Aotearoa that you would like to share, we’d be very interested in hearing from you.
  • If you're interested in having a SeaScope-style platform developed for your own region or specific application, we’re happy to collaborate.
SeaScope Aotearoa is led by Calypso Science, with support from OCEANUM.IO and the Cawthron Institute—a shared effort to make ocean data open, visible, and useful to all.
